Description: The other speaker at Gettysburg on November 19, 1863, orating for over two hours while Lincoln orated for about two minutes -- clergyman, Massachusetts congressman (1825-35) and senator (1853-54) and governor (1836-40), ambassador to Great Britain (1841-45), Secretary of State (1852-53), educator.

ALS, 2pp (lettersheet), 5\" X 8\", Boston, MA, 16 September 1856. Addressed to \"Dr. Bigelow\" (likely attorney/diplomat/historian John Bigelow, 1817-1911). Near fine. Original folds. Noting that he writes from \"Summer Street\" (his Boston home from 1852 to 1865), Everett writes on behalf of \"A friend from Charleston [who] has enquired of me whether the late Mr. Legaré who died in Boston in 1843 (being then Acting Secretary of State of the United States) was buried at Mount Auburn; & if so, whether any monument is placed over him. -- In another case, he wd be glad to find the spot of interment in the Cemetery. I have thought you might perhaps be able to furnish the information....\" Nicely penned and boldly signed in brown ink. Accompanied by adramatic 6\" X 9\" steel-engraved portrait of Everett as he appeared around this same 1856 period, a profile head-and-shoulders likeness within an elaborate oval framework featuring a miniscule vignette at bottom (depicting \"Oration in presence of Lafayette 1824\") and facsimile signature below. Very good. Mild age toning. Hugh Legaré, 1797-1843, was a South Carolina politico, attorney, cabinet member and diplomat -- and while he did die in Boston and was first interred at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, his remains were later interred in an imposing family crypt at Magnolia Cemetery on Edisto Island in Charleston County, South Carolina.
