Excellent Antique Chalkware Bust of the Warrior Hiawatha. Tobacco Store Display For Sale

Up for sale is an early production polychrome chalkware bust titled Hiawatha. This fine example was purchased from a prominent Washington D.C estate and has been in my personal collection for over 25 years. I am posturing for retirement, and want to simplify my decor, so I am offering these lovely Decoratives to the community. This is an early production, probably dating to the 1920's-30's hand painted chalkware bust depicting the warrior Hiawatha. From folk lore, Hiawatha was an Iroquois Indian adopted by the Mohawk tribe and was known as the great peacemaker. This is nice crisp example formed from a low-production mold. He is a handsome dark-skin man with chiseled features and a fearless stare. He is adorned with strands of beads and animal teeth or claws. Below the torso, it is mis-spelled Hiawata. To my understanding, these were produced for tobacco stores for display. This handsome warrior measures 19 1/2" with generous proportions. It is in very good condition considering the delicate nature of chalkware and the brittle aged paint. It does have a painted chip on the right shoulder area which has been well paint matched and a multitude of minor paint losses, as shown. Having said that, it displays wonderfully as you can see.
