Typed manuscript signed: "F. Hopkinson Smith/New York [word crossed out]" on page 18, 18 pages, 8¼x10½, single-sided sheets. Manuscript for "Part IV" of his book on illustrators. Includes typewritten "Note" by Smith, dated: "Sept. 1892", explaining his purpose in writing his book, which was to "convey some idea of the atmosphere surrounding the art life of New York - really the center of our American Bohemia...." He goes on to say, "If I have erred upon the side of optimism and noted only the very best our men produce, it is because I have a profound aoffering belief in the future of our National art...." The manuscript is annotated by Smith in ink on pages 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, and 17 and in pencil on pages 1, 3, 6 and 8 and on the verso of page 18. Numbers have been written (unknown hand, but possibly Smith's) at upper right corners of manuscript portion (not on "Note"). This excerpt is probably from A Day at Laguerre's and Other Days. Nine Sketches, which was published by Houghton Mifflin, Boston in 1892. Smith (1838-1915, born in Baltimore, Maryland), the great-grandson of Francis Hopkinson, one of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, was a noted engineer, artist and writer. After working as a Assistant Superintendent of a New York iron foundry during the Civil War, Smith and a partner, James Symington, started an engineering business that worked on a number of federal government projects over the next 30 years. These projects included the building of the Race Rock Lighthouse, the sea wall on Staten Island, the foundations for the Statue of Liberty and architectural plans for the Mosquito Inlet Lighthouse. A self-taught watercolorist, Smith painted primarily for his own pleasure, not wanting art to become a commercial aspect of his life. During the 1870s and 1880s, Smith, a member of the New York Tile Club, illustrated several books. He also wrote books, illustrated with his own sketches, and gave popular lectures on his travels throughout Europe. Smith also wrote novels, including Colonel Carter of Cartersville and The Fortunes of Oliver Horn. A member of a number of organizations, including the Society of Illustrators, Smith won a number of medals for his work. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature, which is large and bold. Most pages are soiled, primarily at blank areas, minor stains at lower blank margins of pages 2, 12 and 13 and on verso of "Note". Lightly toned, soiled, stained and creased. Staple holes at upper left edges. Small hole in upper right corners. Light tears and dents along edges of some pages. Folded once and unfolded.
