FULLY RESTORED SETH THOMAS ADAMANTINECASE DING DONG STRIKE No.1 MANTEL CLOCK
Offeredfor sale is a Seth Thomas mantel clock with a mahogany-colored Adamantine caseand a fairly rare movement and bell strike combination. Adamantine is a celluloid finish that in thecatalogs is described this way; “the finish is very durable and cannot bescratched or dented by any ordinary usage”. The finish on this clock in very goodcondition for a clock that is over 110 years old. There are a few places where the Adamantinefinish has flaked away, there are pictures that show this. This clock is shown in Ly’s Seth Thomas book,third edition. It is item 1457 on page446. It lists 1913 as the date ofmanufacture and gives $500 as the value.As the catalog states, “the clock strikes out the hours on two patentedresonated bells, of pure tones, rich melody and harmony”. In other terms, the hours sound out as high lowtones on these bells and the half hour is struck on a single bell. One way to think of it is a bim-bam on bellsor a poor man’s Sonora Chime as the bell nest was made by the Sonora ChimeCompany for Seth Thomas. The tone of thebells is really incredible (video is attached) and the clock has a fully andproperly restored rather rare 89T movement that was only used in the Ding Dongclocks. The case measures 11.75 incheshigh and the clock is 14 inches wide at the base. This clock comes with theoriginal pendulum (all the Ding Dong clocks I have ever owned came with the Boyon Fence pendulum) and the original winding key. I ask you to examine the high-resolutionpictures closely as they are a large part of the description of this item.
ABOUTTHE MEANING OF ADAMANTINE
Adamantine means unbreakable,sturdy or hard wearing. The Celluloid Manufacturing Company of New Yorkdeveloped and patented this early form of plastic in 1880, and Seth Thomas soonafter acquired the rights to the material. Celluloid was the first thermoplasticand was made by combining nitrocellulose with camphor. It can take on manycolors with the addition of dyes and other agents. Molding and shaping areeasily accomplished, so it could imitate more expensive materials such as stoneor ivory. Many people use the wordincorrectly, only Seth Thomas had the right to use this material on their clockcases.
WHAT MAKES A CLOCK A GOOD VALUE?
The rules of economics are fairlystraightforward. Simply put, it isalmost impossible to spend a little and get a lot. Antique and vintage clocks follow these rulesas well. You can buy “As Found” clocksfor less money. Then you have to pay ashop to go through the movement and when you are done, you have spent more thanif you would have offer on the nicer clocks in the beginning. I have tried through the photos to show thebasic steps that I do in restoring these wonderful machines to their original state. My goal is to provide you with a quality timepiece that will provide enjoyment and be a source of pride in your home foryears to come. Equally important to meis to provide you with a clock that I believe will retain its value over theyears. That is what I think constitutesreal value in antique and vintage clocks.
MY PHILOSOPHY ON CLOCKS AND CLOCK MOVEMENTS.
Theonly way to properly repair a movement is to completely disassemble, clean andinspect all parts, and make the needed repairs by proper horoligicalmethods. This includes the rebushing ofall worn holes and the polishing of any rough pivots. The movements are then reassembled,lubricated with a high-quality clock oil and test run for 8 days. This is a very time intensive process but isthe only correct way to properly recondition a clock movement. You should expect a movement repaired in thismanner to run for ten years trouble-free.I have been doing clock repair for over 42 years. I apprenticed under an Oregon State licensedrepairman and have been a member of the National Association of Watch and ClockCollectors (NAWCC) since 1981. I do notmake a living doing this; it has become a passion of mine. I go to estate sales, sales, and searchplaces like and Craigslist to find clocks that are in need ofrestoration. Once they are made like newmechanically, I put them up for sale in the hopes of paying for my materialsand upgrading my personal collection. Myhope is also to provide you with an heirloom to cherish for years to come.

Buyers need to understand that the clocks Isell are between 80 and 140 years old.While the movements are fully serviced, all of my clocks show some scarsfrom these decades of use. I try todescribe these marks as best I can and mention them in my listing text. I count on the buyer to read the entiresale text and examine the high-resolution pictures closely to make sure theclock meets your needs and expectations.I am always willing to make good on any shipping damage through theinsurance process but I am no longer willing to offer partial refunds simplybecause the buyer did not read the listing or examine the sale photos.
