Up for sale is a nice vintage T.H. Witherby 10" straight bladed drawknife with a complete Woodcraft brand chamfer guide with 4" beam. The blade is clean and sharp, and the wood handles retain most of their original finish. Prior owner's initials stamped just above the left handle. Excellent condition otherwise. A fine USA-made tool ready for many more years of work to come. Drawknife is about 16 3/4" long overall.
Witherby made some of the best edge tools in 19th century New England from his Millbury, Massachusetts workshop, even being contracted to manufacture bayonets for the Union during the Civil War in 1862.
He sold his toolmaking operation towards the late 1800's, eventually leading to the relocation of the production facility to Winsted, CT. Witherby Tool Works became Winsted Edge Tool Works sometime in the 1870s - 1880s.
