French & Indian War British "Battalion Box" - Cartridge Box with Sling
Known as "Battalion Boxes" or "Battalion Pouches," these regimentally supplied cartridge boxes began to come into service with British regiments during the middle part of the 1700s. There was much variation in the designs, but in general the boxes consisted of a wooden block with from 21 to 36 holes for cartridges surrounded by a leather covering having a flap that folded over and protected the ammunition. The boxes were suspended by a wide leather belt having brass buckles for adjustment. These Battalion Boxes would have been standard wear for British soldiers serving during the French & Indian War (and Seven Years War in Europe). The boxes can be seen worn by British Grenadiers in David Morier's famous painting of Britain's grenadiers in 1751. Boxes of similar pattern would have been used into Revolutionary Period by American militia and Patriot forces.
