Photo Overview
Astronauts Alan B. Shepard Jr. and John W. Young are captured in this photograph while riding the elevator to the white room atop the Gemini Launch Vehicle on Pad 19, dated March 22, 1965. Shepard, wearing a helmet and a badge labeled "GEMINI," stands alongside Young as they prepare for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's GT-3 flight scheduled for the following day.
Alan B. Shepard Jr. was the first American in space, piloting the Mercury Redstone 3 mission in May 1961. John W. Young became one of the most accomplished astronauts, eventually walking on the moon during the Apollo 16 mission. This photograph captures a pivotal moment just before the first manned Gemini flight, marking a significant advancement in NASA's manned space exploration.
