Up for sale is this RAREORIGINAL[NOT a repro/reprint]Albumen Stereoview with Civil War Tax/Revenue Stampby John Carbutttitled: 1.--Grand Saloon, Steamer Northern Light. This stereoview from circa 1865 shows the Grand Saloon on the Mississippi River Steamer \"Northern Light\" that was owned by the Northwestern Packet Company. The ship was built in Madison, Ind, 1856/1857. It was considered to be the fastest boat on the upper Mississippi at that time. It was destroyed / sank near La Crosse, Wis in early April 1866. From the LITTLE info I could find, the Northwestern Packet Co was around from 1863 to 1866 and was headquartered in Dubuque, Iowa. This would make an OUTSTANDING addition to ANY stereoview, Carbutt, Mississippi River, River Steamer, or transportation collection.
Front LEFT edge says: Beauties of the Upper Mississippi ~ Minnesota and Vicinity. Front RIGHT edge says: Photographed by J. Carbutt, Chicago, ~ Under the Auspices of the N\'th-west\'n Packet Company. TITLE in lower right front says: 1.--Grand Saloon, Steamer Northern Light. The BACK of stereoview has no printed info, but DOES have a 2c U.S. int. Rev. Proprietary pre-canceled revenue tax stamp. From Aug 1 1864 to Aug 1, 1866 there was a tax on photographs to help pay for the Civil War, so this stereoview ORIGINALLY sold for 25c or less during that time period and is 156+ years old!!! Stereoview is standard sized (approximately 3 1/2\" height x 7\" length).
NOTE: I consider this view to be Rare / HARD TO FIND, since the LAST sale that I could find of an identical image was over a decade ago!!!
Stereoview will be placed in an archival stereoview sleeve, securely packaged, and S&H includes insurance.
