This music box, labeled an "Ideal", was made in the late 1800's, by Mermod Freres of Ste. Croix, Switzerland. It was during a time of the encroaching competition of the disk music box and the "talking machine". So, Mermod had to make something loud enough and with enough selections to compete. And so they did, with a lineup of music boxes such as this that have outstanding volume as well as a vast selection of cylinders to choose from. As an aside note, Mermod also made disk music boxes (Stella and Mira) and incorporated phonographs into some of their later models ("Miraphones").
Here we have a very large cylinder music box, in a solid oak case, about 36" wide x 15" deep and 12" high when closed. Very impressive as well, with bronze lifting handles on either end, and front metallic trim pieces.
The cylinders have a pinned length of 18" and are in excellent condition, as well as the combs and mechanism, with the large spring motor capable of playing many songs between windings. The mechanism is wound out the right by a large hand crank.
The musical format is called a "Sublime Harmonie Piccolo" and there are newer tune sheets shown that list the songs.
