One by one, every streetlamp on Privet Drive goes out,the light gathering back into the device like water down a drain, until thewhole road lies in darkness and nobody in those tidy houses sees a thing. Onlythen does Albus Dumbledore stoop to leave a baby on a doorstep.

Think about what that scene is actually doing. Harry'sentire story begins with light being removed, deliberately and gently, so thata child can arrive unseen and survive the night. The first spell most readerslearn by name is Lumos, wand-tip light, the thing you cast when you arefrightened of the dark in a corridor at Hogwarts. The Deluminator is its exactopposite, and it is in the hands of the only wizard in the books whounderstands that sometimes the darkness is the kindness.

It disappears for several books, apart from quick use by MadEye Moody who had borrowed it in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.Then comes Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Rufus Scrimgeour arrives atthe Burrow with Dumbledore's will, and to a bemused Ron Weasley, who has spentseven years being the friend rather than the chosen one, the greatest wizard ofthe age has left a small silver object that puts lights out. Ron turns it overin his hands and cannot think what it is for. Neither can anyone else. It lookslike an afterthought, or worse, a joke.

And then, in the frozen worst of Harry Potter and the DeathlyHallows, Ron walks out on his friends and spends weeks hating himself forit. On Christmas Eve, alone, he hears Hermione's voice come out of theDeluminator saying his name. He clicks it, and a small ball of light floatsout, drifts into his chest, and he knows, simply knows, where to Apparate.

Dumbledore had not left him a gadget at all. He had left hima way home, made of light, given to the one person who would need to find hisway back. If that lands the way it should, you already know where this onebelongs.
