Designated in 1983, it is one of the firstfederally recognizedAmerican Viticultural Areas. Thedesignation recognized the renaissance of an area of vineyards and wineriesestablished by Rhinelanders during the mid-19th century. Shut down byProhibition, it began torevive in the 1960s.Hermann holdsaMaifestduringthe third weekend in May and anOktoberfestthe first fourweekends in October. Hermann was thenearest town to theGasconade Bridge train disaster,November 1, 1855. The Leimer Hotel in Hermannwas used as a temporaryhospital to treat the wounded.
