100 Stories by Artie
Artie Barkley is a native of Cass, WV and a third generation resident of Pocahontas County. Following his high school graduation he hired out on the then newly formed Cass Scenic Railroad. Working as a locomotive hostler, fireman, engineer, and shop supervisor he spent a total of 43 years on that railroad.
In 2021 he began writing anecdotal stories about Cass, the railroad and his own experiences. He posted them on his Facebook page to share with his friends. Originally written as a stream of consciousness, selected stories from those posts are collected and presented here in topical biographical order.
Artie has presented in essence his “life and times at Cass”. They capture his recollections in his own conversational style and reveal his respect for the work ethics of his ancestors and his coworkers.
Artie loves to make people laugh. His stories are presented here for your enjoyment and insight into the happenings of a railroad and a community steeped in the lore of the logging industry in West Virginia.
