This is an Isle of Wight Glass Sand Bell Needles Rocks by W. Carpenter c.1870s. Contains the natural coloured sands of Alum Bay, Isle of Wight. Arranged to represent The Needles Rocks Alum Bay by William Carpenter (see paper label on the base).Carpenter was a 19th-century artist, bookseller, and maker of traditional Alum Bay sand pictures and ornaments depicting landmarks on the Isle of Wight. Carpenter first operated in Southampton during the early 1840s as a bookseller and ran the \"Southampton Repository of Arts\".He relocated his business to the Isle of Wight sometime between 1844 and 1851. Excellent original condition. Base diameter 8 cm. Top diameter 2.5 cm. Height 16.5 cm.
