Product Description

From a curated collection of vintage ceramic art tiles and wall plaques assembled by an antique dealer. We will be offering a number of pieces from the collection separately.

A striking and distinctive OOAKoriginal hand-drawn and hand-painted vintage art panel depicting a whimsical pair of lovers holding hands beneath a large red heart. The elongated faces, expressive eyes and wonderfully eccentric figures are brought to life in brilliant yellow, red, orange, green and blue.

This is not a printed or transferred image. The composition was first freely drawn by hand in black outline and then individually painted, with the artist\'s original drawing strokes, doubled lines, brushwork and natural variations readily visible throughout. It has wonderful personality and immediacy when viewed up close.

The work is signed at the lower right with an unidentified signature that appears possibly to read “Turi.” The bold color, playful figures and graphic treatment are strongly reminiscent of Giovanni DeSimone and mid-century Sicilian/Italian folk-art design. DeSimone is used here as a stylistic reference only; we have not identified the artist and are not attributing the work to DeSimone.

Painted on a thin, lightweight rigid hardboard/fiberboard (Masonite-type) panel with a black-painted reverse and wire hanger. There is wear/damage around the hanger attachment on the reverse, as photographed; it does not detract from the artwork when displayed.

An especially appealing and unusual piece of mid-century modern folk art—colorful, romantic, slightly quirky and very much a one-of-a-kind decorative statement.
