John Buscema – Galactus: The Devourer Original Cover Preliminary Archive (4 Pieces) – Marvel 1999–2000
All four original drawings have remained together and come with unusually strong direct Marvel editorial provenance. They were personally given by John Buscema to Brian Smith, who served as Assistant Editor on Galactus: The Devourer while the series was being produced.
The archive includes two alternate preliminary compositions for the published cover of Galactus: The Devourer #4, an original preliminary for the published cover of issue #6, and a fourth elaborate Buscema composition handwritten “Book 2,” apparently representing another proposed or developmental concept created during work on the series.
This is not a group assembled later from unrelated sources. These four pieces were retained together by a member of the Marvel editorial staff who worked directly on the project.
TWO ALTERNATE PRELIMINARIES FOR GALACTUS: THE DEVOURER #4
Two of the drawings show successive versions of essentially the same cover composition, providing a particularly revealing look into John Buscema's creative process.
Both feature a monumental Galactus looming over the composition, with Silver Surfer and Mantis together in the foreground.
The second version develops the concept further, refining Galactus' face and hand, the positioning of the foreground characters, Silver Surfer's board and the overall balance of the image.
The finished published cover of Galactus: The Devourer #4 retains the same essential concept: a gigantic Galactus dominating the background while Silver Surfer and Mantis occupy the foreground. The published cover was penciled by John Buscema and inked by Bill Sienkiewicz.
Together, these two drawings provide a rare opportunity to see Buscema working through alternate versions of a published Marvel cover before arriving at the final composition.
GALACTUS: THE DEVOURER #6 PUBLISHED COVER PRELIMINARY
The third major piece is handwritten “cover #6” across the top and is directly identifiable as an original preliminary for the published cover of Galactus: The Devourer #6.
The drawing contains the fundamental elements carried into the final cover: an enormous, sharply angled close-up of Galactus, Silver Surfer positioned dramatically above him, and the sweeping diagonal architectural forms that give the composition its sense of scale and movement.
The final published cover of issue #6 was penciled by John Buscema and inked by Bill Sienkiewicz, and depicts Galactus and the Silver Surfer. The issue concludes the six-part series with “The Death of Galactus the Devourer.”
The similarities between Buscema's preliminary and the published image make this piece an especially compelling example of the artist's cover-development process.
“BOOK 2” COMPOSITION
The fourth drawing is the most densely developed of the group and is handwritten “Book 2” at the top.
The artwork is dominated by a massive central image of Galactus, surrounded by numerous smaller figures, energy blasts and action elements radiating through the composition.
Unlike the #4 and #6 examples, this design does not correspond closely enough to the final published cover of issue #2 to describe it as the definitive #2 cover preliminary. The published #2 cover instead features Silver Surfer battling Galactus' new herald, Red Shift.
Its elaborate layout makes it a fascinating example of Buscema exploring possible imagery for the series.
DIRECT JOHN BUSCEMA → MARVEL EDITORIAL PROVENANCE
The provenance accompanying this group is exceptional.
A signed Letter of Provenance dated August 28, 2026 from Brian Smith states:
“This is to confirm that these four (4) original John Buscema artworks from the Marvel Comics GALACTUS: THE DEVOURER limited Series (1999-2000) were gifted to me from John while I was an Assistant Editor on the project at the time.”
Marvel's published credits independently confirm Brian Smith as Assistant Editor on Galactus: The Devourer, including issues #2, #4 and #6.

ABOUT THE SERIES
Galactus: The Devourer was a six-issue Marvel limited series published from 1999 into 2000 and written by Louise Simonson.
After Jon J. Muth handled the first issue, legendary Marvel artist John Buscema penciled issues #2 through #6, working with Bill Sienkiewicz on the finished artwork and covers. The series centered on Galactus, Silver Surfer and a cosmic conflict involving many of Marvel's major heroes.
The project is particularly significant within Buscema's career because it represents late-career Marvel work involving characters with whom he had an extraordinarily important artistic association, especially the Silver Surfer and Galactus.
THE FOUR ORIGINAL DRAWINGS
- Artwork #1: Alternate preliminary for the Galactus: The Devourer #4 cover, featuring Galactus, Silver Surfer and Mantis.
- Artwork #2: More developed alternate preliminary for the Galactus: The Devourer #4 cover, again featuring Galactus, Silver Surfer and Mantis and moving substantially closer to the published composition.
- “Book 2” Artwork: Elaborate proposed series composition featuring a monumental Galactus surrounded by numerous figures and energy effects; handwritten “Book 2.”
- “Cover #6” Artwork: Published-cover preliminary for Galactus: The Devourer #6, featuring Silver Surfer above an enormous close-up image of Galactus and clearly anticipating the final Buscema/Sienkiewicz cover.
All four are original hand-drawn John Buscema artworks, not prints, photocopies or reproductions.
CONDITION
The drawings exhibit normal characteristics of working preliminary artwork and long-term editorial storage, including horizontal and/or vertical folds, handling wear, creasing and minor age-related imperfections.
Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition.
