Blackrock Castle,which stands on the River Lee guarding the river entrance to CorkCity, has been fortified since about 1582. Although Blackrock Castleis the most complete building of its type in the County of Cork, andone of the city's best-known landmarks, it is truly not a castle atall, but a watch tower fortress.
Itappears that the citizens of Cork built the original fort, in 1582 tosafeguard against the pirates whom, were 'carrying away' the vesselsentering the harbour. This was further supported by a petition to theQueen in 1585 stating that Cork had "a fort called Blackrock"which the citizens "maintain with artillery to resist piratesand other invaders".
The original castlereplaced the fort in 1604 and was erected by Lord Mountjoy. Thecastle was built as much to defend Mountjoy against the citizens ofCork (who had showed rebellious inclinations the year before whenthey refused to acknowledge King James I as their new monarchfollowing the unlamented death of Queen Elizabeth) as against thethreat of a Spanish invasion. The fear of the Spaniards was stillvery much alive following the Battle of Kinsale and provided theincentive for the construction of this and similar forts to defendthe water approaches to the city.
The castle, now asimple circular tower, was returned to the City by James I no laterthan1608. The structure was used as a light beacon to guide shippingand was fueled by burning turf. In 1722, the tower was destroyed byfire, but was rebuilt by the citizens of Cork. The new castleincluded a circular tower described as a 'handsome octagon room'crowned by a cupola and flagstaff and again included a light beaconon top of an adjoining cylindrical tower. This second building wasagain destroyed by fire in 1827 and was rebuilt in 1829 by the city.
Inthe early 20th century, the castle was used as a meeting place bylocal organizations, but fell into disrepair until around 1930 whenit was leased to J.C. Sperrin-Johnson, a Professor of Botany, who wasresponsible for extensive renovation. After Professor Johnson'stenure, the castle again deteriorated until it was acquired in the1960's by a group of Cork businessmen for use as abar/Restaurant/Banqueting Center.
