Expandeddescription of actual structure:
Standingamong beech woods on a steep hillside overlooking the River Tan,CasteIl Coch (pronounced COE) lying just five miles from the centerof Cardiff, South Wales, is one of the most romantic buildings in theBritish Isles. The original castle on this site, built in the 13thcentury by Gilbert the Red, Earl of Gloucester, was to guard theplain of Cardiff against the Welsh. Sometime in the 15th centuryCasteIl Coch, the Red Castle, was destroyed, apparently by mines andfire. In 1871, the owner of CasteIl Coch, Lord Bute, reputedly therichest man in the world at that time, arranged for his architect,William Burges, to survey the ruined site with the idea ofreconstruction.
Burges's startlingturret designs for CasteIl Coch, which make such an exoticsilhouette, were always historically controversial. Burges defendedthem as authentic, citing manuscript sources, continental examples, and the lack of evidence to the contrary. When Burges suddenly diedin 1881, before much of the interior work on the castle had beencompleted, work continued under Burges's colleagues, who were loyalto his intentions and familiar with his methods.
Whereas theexterior is a reasonably accurate reconstruction of a medievalcastle, the interior represents the extravagant side of Burges'simagination. CasteIl Coch was finished 1891 but was rarely used. LordBute died in 1900, but his fantastic creation is still valued as amagnificent example of High Victorian Gothic architecture and as anidealized representation of a medieval castle.
Forthe castle, Burges designed furniture, stained glass, jewelry andmetal work that is reflected in the wonderfully ornate interiors.External features include the drawbridge, portcullis, the projectingwooden platform and the statue of the Virgin and Child; the onlysoftening touch to an otherwise stark exterior.
