Description

This is a vintage wooden mask used in “Kagura,” a traditional theatrical performance passed down in western Japan, specifically following the style of Kagura masks from the Bitchū region.

The reverse side bears the signature “Kiyomi (清己)” and the mask is hand-carved.

This work is attributed to Yokota Kiyomi, an artisan of Kagura masks who was also a stage performer.
His advanced carving skills as a craftsman, combined with his experience as a performer, are reflected in the mask’s powerful expression and sculptural depth.

The design is inspired by Fudō Myōō (Acala), a protective deity in Japanese Buddhism known for warding off evil and disaster.
Rather than being tied to a specific stage performance, this piece represents a fusion of religious symbolism and artistic expression.

In Japan, artisans who produce Kagura masks are not merely makers of performance tools, but are also regarded as sculptors and artists.
Such works are sometimes created for personal commissions, artistic refinement, or as talismans for protection and good fortune.

In addition, the expression carries a strong intensity reminiscent of traditional Japanese “Hannya” masks, which symbolize jealousy and resentment, giving the piece a powerful and dramatic presence.
