John Wilkes Booth c1865 Magic Lantern hand painted glass slide Abraham Lincoln For Sale

This vibrantly hand-colored, beautifully detailed magic lantern slide depicting a scene related to the assassination of president Abraham Lincoln and features his assassin, John Wilkes Booth. "The Shooting of Booth." The scene at Richard Garrett's barn in Port Royal, Virginia, where Booth and his co-conspirator David Herold were hiding after a twelve day manhunt. Booth refuses to come out, so soldiers set the barn on fire to force him out. As Booth tries to escape, he is shot by Union Sergeant Boston Corbett. Herold is seen surrendering to the soldiers.This circular glass slide measures approximately 3" in diameter and sits in a wooden mount measuring 7" x 4". The wooden frame exhibits scratches, small dents, staining, and corner wear but is overall in superb condition for the age. These early examples, set in wooden frames, are quite scarce and are amongst the most treasured.Provenance: Sold for $440 at The Rail Splitter's September 15, 2005 sale.
