In October 2002 a tri-national detachment of 18 Dutch,DanishandNorwegianF-16 ground attack aircraft and one Dutch KDC-10 tanker deployed toManas Air BaseinKyrgyzstanin support of ground forces inAfghanistanas part ofOperation Enduring Freedom. The RNLAF returned to Manas AB in September 2004 with five F-16 and one KDC-10 in support of the presidential elections of Afghanistan. This time the aircraft flew under theNATOISAFflag. In February 2006 four Dutch F-16s were joined by fourRoyal Norwegian Air ForceF-16s in a detachment known as the 1st Netherlands-Norwegian European Participating Forces Expeditionary Air Wing (1 NLD/NOR EEAW). This was a follow up of the participation with the Belgian Air Force. As part of the expanded NATO ISAF mission in southern Afghanistan in August 2006, the Royal Netherlands Air Force had six F-16 ground-attack aircraft, three CH-47D Chinook of 298 Sq stationed atKandahar Airfield. Additionally, a detachment of fiveAH-64D Apachehelicopters had been stationed ofTarin Kowt, Uruzgan province. The F-16 flight is planned to stay operational in support of ground forces at least until 2014, providing Close Air Support and Recce Flights (specialised in counter-ied\'s). The Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) purchased 213 General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin) F-16 Fighting Falcons in total, with deliveries starting in 1979 and concluding in 1992. In its heyday, this highly capable multi-role fighter equipped nine RNLAF squadrons. 312 sqn became operational on the viper on October 1st, 1985. It was the first squadron who implemented the swing role concept from the start on. The squadron was also responsible for the strike role, together with its sister squadron, the 311th. Although a public secret, it is generally believed that Volkel AB hosts tactical nuclear devices of the B-61 type. This is a part of NATO deterrence which is still a key cornerstone of the alliances strategy till this day.During operation Deny Flight, the squadron formed an expeditionary unit together with its sister squadron, the 311th. They became the \'623rd sqn\' during this operation (312 + 311 makes 623). This was the first operation after the Indonesian campaign in the sixties in which Dutch fighters where tasked in offensive missions. As of 2022, No 312 Squadron at Volkel Air Base is the last of these nine units to fly the type nicknamed ‘Viper’ and it is also currently the only fully operational fighter squadron in the RNLAF. The unit’s transition to the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II fifth-generation multi-role stealth fighter is due to start in 2024, but in the meantime, the squadron has two very important missions to perform. No 312 Squadron is responsible for covering two different mission sets. The first regards the protection of Dutch airspace by means of the Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) mission, while the second surrounds the execution of nuclear strike taskings on behalf of the NATO alliance.While the defence and promotion of the international order remain a core task of the Dutch armed forces, this fully operational squadron is not used in that role. In short, this means that the unit will not conduct any more deployments to Jordan – for example – to support coalition combat operations in the Middle East. Even so, the RNLAF still offers a squadron of fighter aircraft to NATO to defend allied territory – as is currently being seen over Eastern Europe following Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine – and this role could still potentially fall to 312 Squadron.In common with the entire Dutch armed forces, Vreeburg has to deal with budget constraints and the prioritising of the F-35A over the RNLAF’s remaining F-16AM/BM (MLU) Fighting Falcons, given that the latter will be withdrawn from service within the next few years.Operational and logistical support from outside the squadron is a source of concern, confided Vreeburg. He noticed this while preparing for and during Exercise Gioia Falcon and told AFM that it is a problem felt across the RNLAF.
