As war between France and Britain spreads to North America, King Louis commissions an infantry officer for service in Canada (1744). Countersigned by the Marine Secretary, Count Maurepas
Manuscript Document Signed by a deputy: "Louis", 19x14½. Also signed "Phelypeaux" as Secretary of Marine and the Royal Household. Versailles, April 1, 1744. Military commission, the appointment of a Sub-Lieutenant of Infantry to a Company in Canada. Docketing includes acknowledgement by a naval official in Quebec. In 1740, France entered the War of the Austrian Succession, a war with shifting alliances but with Britain and France always on opposing sides. Louis XV would actually lead troops in the field during the conflict, as did Frederick II of Prussia and George II of Britain. After a brief peace, the war resumed in 1744 and it spread to North America, where it was known as King George\'s War. French forces, perhaps including the officer commissioned here, took the offensive first, attacking Nova Scotia and upper New York. (Saratoga was sacked by French soldiers and their Indian allies.) However, colonial troops from Massachusetts, assisted by the British Navy, captured the great French fortress of Louisbourg, long a thorn in the side of New Englanders, in June 1745. American colonists were outraged when Britain returned the fortress to France in the peace treaty of 1748, swapping it for Madras, in India. LOUIS XV (1710-1774) reigned as King of France from 1715-1774, first with Philippe II, duc d\'Orléans as Regent (1710-1723) and then guided by his advisor André Hercule de Fleury (1726-1743). The reign of the Bourbon king was known for both love and war. His mistresses, Madame de Pompadour and Madame du Barry, became as well known as the King himself. His 1725 marriage to Marie Leszcynska plunged France into the War of the Polish Succession. As a result of this and a number of succeeding wars, including the Seven Years War, expenses mounted, but Louis\' court continued its extravagances and the government was nearly bankrupt by the end of his reign. His failure to solve the government\'s financial difficulties led directly to the French Revolution, which occurred during the reign of his successor, Louis XVI. Jean-Frederic PHELYPEAUX, COUNT MAUREPAS (1701-1781) succeeded his father as Secretary of Marine and the Royal Household for King Louis XV. He sided with the opponents of administrative and fiscal reform, and thus bears some responsibility for the French government\'s virtual bankruptcy by the time of the Revolution. However, he did support technical improvements that strengthened the French Navy. Horizontal and vertical fold creases with multiple small wear holes - none affecting verbiage or signatures. Soiled and toned. Two red wax stains.
