King George VI Queen Elizabeth Portsmouth 1937 Photo Coronation Fleet Press Photo:
$45.93

According to the original contemporary press caption, the photograph shows King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen Elizabeth II, arriving at Portsmouth on the right. On the left, the Duke and Duchess of Kent are shown leaving their motor car. A large crowd, Royal Navy personnel and decorations associated with the Coronation celebrations can be seen in the background.

The photograph relates to the 1937 Coronation Fleet Review, held at Spithead off Portsmouth on 20 May 1937, only eight days after the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at Westminster Abbey on 12 May.

The reverse retains its original German-language press caption headed “Der König trifft zur Flottenschau in Portsmouth ein”, identifying the image as a “The New York Times Photo”, No. 37520. It also bears the original “Copyright Photograph Supplied by Wide World Photos, 8 Salisbury Square, Fleet Street, London E.C.4” agency stamp, a historical “25 MAI 1937” date stamp and various contemporary editorial/archive markings.

Condition: Fair used condition for its age. The photograph shows noticeable age-related toning/discoloration, scattered small spots, surface and handling wear and wear to the edges and corners. Most notably, the upper right corner has been diagonally cut away/is missing. Additional minor creasing and pressure marks are present. Despite these defects, the main photographic image remains clear and detailed. Reverse shows age toning, spotting, archival stamps and contemporary handwritten editorial annotations. The original press caption remains present and shows age-related folding/creasing. Please examine the photographs carefully for exact condition.
