BACKGROUND: The Knights of Pythias was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1864 by Justus H. Rathbone. It was the first fraternal organization to receive a charter from the United States Congress, after President Abraham Lincoln recommended the organization. The Knights of Pythias is based on the story of Damon and Pythias, two ancient Greek figures who were friends.
