So here we are.
Ten little red heart-shaped lights, each emblazoned with I Love Lucy, because apparently regular Christmas lights were simply not carrying enough emotional responsibility. You could have tiny white lights like everyone else, or you could have your holiday greenery illuminated by a woman who once tried to keep pace with a conveyor belt full of chocolates and routinely turned minor inconveniences into municipal emergencies.
The choice was made for us.
This Kurt S. Adler 10-light novelty set is still new in its original package, where it has been quietly marinating in Christmas history instead of actually performing its one assigned task. The box does show some storage wear, scuffing and assorted evidence of having existed for a while, including the remains of an old price sticker on the front. Nothing catastrophic. Just vintage packaging doing what vintage packaging does while the rest of us inexplicably continue aging right along with it.
The lights themselves have stayed tucked inside, untouched and unbothered, so I have not tested them. I refuse to disturb decades of peaceful retirement simply to discover whether Lucy is prepared to glow on command. They are vintage electrical Christmas lights. They may work beautifully. They may require a bulb or fuse. They may have developed opinions. We simply do not know.
What I do know is that at one point you could walk into a store and leave with a box containing ten illuminated I Love Lucy hearts, and I would like everyone to remember this the next time somebody claims civilization is progressing.
