Hand-carved wooden chests and jewelry boxes have been produced in various regions of East Asia, most notably China, for centuries as both functional storage containers and decorative art pieces. These items often utilize aromatic woods like camphor wood, which naturally repels insects and protects the delicate textiles or jewelry stored inside. During the mid-20th century, particularly following the post-World War II era and into the 1970s, a large volume of these intricately carved wooden chests was exported to Western markets. Skilled artisans utilized traditional relief carving techniques to depict auspicious symbols such as dragons, pagodas, and floral patterns, catering to international interest in Asian craftsmanship.
