Little Rock & Western Alco C420 101 at Preston, Arkansas, July 6, 1991. Photographer: Craig Garver. Scanned from a 35mm Kodachrome slide owned by Digital Rail Artist.
\"Ah, the classic lines of an Alco C420 ... uh, wait, no, something isn\'t right. This unit was built as Long Island Railroad 207 in February, 1964, Alco builder number 84729. It was retired and sold to the Erie Western, a start up shortline. This unit was built to run long hood forward, and had a high short hood to accommodate a boiler for passenger service. When mechanical issues reached the point that the Erie Western\'s own shop could not repair, they sent it to the Green Bay & Western in 1979. When the heavy repairs were completed, those too were beyond the capability of the Erie Western. A deal was worked out so that GB&W would use the unit until the cost of the repairs were worked off. Even more repairs were needed, and the bill kept getting higher, even as the Erie Western was sliding into financial collapse. By the end of the year, Green Bay Packaging was getting ready to start their Little Rock & Western operations, and bought this unit and another C420, Louisville & Nashville 1317, and had them both rebuilt by the GB&W. Operations on the LR&W started on April 1, 1980, and GB&W supplied two units until the rebuilt C420\'s were ready. As part of the rebuilding work, GB&W\'s Norwood shop chopped the nose, as you see here.\" - Digital Rail Artist
