LORD JOHN MANNERS – AUTOGRAPH FRAGMENT REFERRING TO QUEEN VICTORIA – ON ORIGINAL H. F. PONSONBY PRINTED SLIP, c.1875–1895
A small but highly significant Victorian court fragment, cut from a letter written by Lord John Manners (later 7th Duke of Rutland) on official stationery bearing the printed heading “H. F. PONSONBY.” Sir Henry Frederick Ponsonby served as Queen Victoria’s Private Secretary from 1875–1895, making this a genuine piece of late‑Victorian court correspondence.
The surviving ink text reads:
“The QueenManners”
This is the typical closing reference and signature used by Manners when writing to Ponsonby on matters involving Queen Victoria, court arrangements, or ministerial business touching the Crown. The printed H. F. PONSONBY heading is original to the document, not a dealer addition, confirming the fragment’s court‑level provenance.
A fine Victorian court piece, even as a fragment, with stronger context than typical Manners autograph cuttings.
