Original Magic & Illusion Poster – "George, The Supreme Master of Magic" – Otis Litho Co. – ca. 1929
A classic and strikingly detailed original stone color lithograph poster advertising Grover George (1887–1958), performing as "George – The Supreme Master of Magic" for his "Triumphant American Tour".
Printed by the famed Otis Lithograph Company of Cleveland, Ohio, this full one-sheet poster depicts George dressed in a formal tuxedo surrounded by elaborate imagery of classic illusions, mysterious Oriental motifs, red imps/devils, cards fanning out, pyramids, a sphinx, and spectral figures. Billed with "18 People" and a "Carload of Scenic Effects", this poster captures the grandeur of 1920s stage magic.
Historical Background
Grover George was a prominent American magician who built a massive stage show. During much of the 1920s, he toured extensively throughout Cuba, Central America, and South America. Upon returning to launch his "Triumphant American Tour" in 1929, he faced intense legal and commercial opposition from his fierce rival Howard Thurston, leading George to return to South America where he spent the remainder of his career.
