Original 1921 typed letter signed (TLS) on official Wheaton College letterhead from Charles A. Blanchard, second President of Wheaton College, to incoming student William J. Jones.
Dated May 19, 1921, the letter acknowledges Jones\'s recent correspondence and confirms that his academic classification has been submitted for review while noting that his reservation fee has been forwarded to the college treasurer and credited toward his tuition.
The letter reads in part:
\"I am submitting it to our examiner who will determine your classification... I am also passing to our treasurer your reservation fee... it is credited to your own college bills.\"
Signed in ink by Charles A. Blanchard (1848–1925), who served as Wheaton College\'s president from 1882 until 1925, guiding the institution through four decades of growth and helping establish its identity as a leading conservative evangelical college.
William J. Jones Provenance
This letter was preserved by William J. Jones, Wheaton College Class of 1925, who later attended Princeton Theological Seminary, became a friend and associate of J. Gresham Machen and Oswald T. Allis, and eventually served for many years as editor of the Sunday School Times. Jones assembled an important archive documenting the rise of twentieth-century conservative evangelicalism and Westminster Theological Seminary.
As an early document from Jones\'s student years, this letter represents the beginning of that remarkable historical journey.
