15 Original Photographic Prints / 16 Photographers

An exceptional 1983 photography portfolio comprising 15 original photographic works by 16 photographers, accompanied by the portfolio's printed contents and Jack Welpott's essay “The Doing-Being Gang.”

The portfolio brings together photographers associated with a particularly rich period in Northern California photography and presents work made between 1972 and 1982. The fifteen works employ a notably varied range of photographic processes, including silver gelatin, toned and hand-colored silver gelatin, palladium, split-tone gelatin silver, and Cibachrome.

The portfolio contains:

1. Oliver Gagliani — Untitled, 1982 — 9 x 12 in. — Silver Gelatin Print

2. Wally Wong — Bush, Death Valley, California, 1972 — 10 x 13 in. — Silver Gelatin Print

3. Lyle Gomes — Sand Wave, Death Valley, California, 1982 — 10 x 13 in. — Silver Gelatin Print

4. Don Antón — As Within Some Things, 1982 — 9 x 9 in. — Silver Gelatin Print

5. Diane Pierce — Calla Lilies, 1981 — 8 x 9 in. — Toned, Hand-Colored Silver Gelatin Print

6. Michael Creedon — Salt in Silver, Redwood City, California, 1980 — 10 x 13 in. — Silver Gelatin Print

7. Will Hiroshi Oda / Lisa Morrison Oda — Untitled, 1982 — 6 x 9 in. — Palladium, Hand Colored
This single collaborative work accounts for the portfolio containing 15 prints by 16 photographers.

8. Don Worth — Two Palm Trees, Salinas, California, 1980 — 10 x 13 in. — Silver Gelatin Print

9. Neal White — Untitled, 1981 — 8 x 9 in. — Toned Silver Gelatin Print

10. Richard Lohmann — Ships Bow, Bay Bridge–Interstate 80, SF Skyline, 1982 — 5 x 7 in. — Split Tone Gelatin Silver Print

11. Irene Poon — Music, 1979 — 9 x 14 in. — Cibachrome Print

12. Johnny Alterman — Bare Feet, from the series Vertical Walkways, 1982 — 10 x 13 in. — Silver Gelatin Print

13. Mark Citret — Black Canyon #2, 1982 — 8 x 10 in. — Silver Gelatin Print

14. Tony Gardner — Untitled, from The Garden Series, 1982 — 10 x 13 in. — Silver Gelatin Print

15. Jack Welpott — Verrieres, France, 1981 — 10 x 12 in. — Silver Gelatin Print

The portfolio also contains Jack Welpott's 1983 text, “The Doing-Being Gang.” Welpott describes the photographers collectively as the “DOING-BEING GANG” and discusses the philosophical approach to photography that connects their work.

His essay places this approach within a broader photographic and artistic conversation, referring to Alfred Stieglitz, Minor White, Ralph Hattersley, John Collier, Jerry Uelsmann, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams and Fred Sommer. Rather than presenting the photographers simply as a collection of individual makers, Welpott's text provides an unusually personal contemporary statement about the ideas connecting the group and their approach to photographic seeing and making.

Of particular interest is the diversity of photographic processes represented within a single portfolio. Alongside traditional silver gelatin prints are Diane Pierce's toned and hand-colored silver gelatin print, the Odas' hand-colored palladium print, Richard Lohmann's split-tone gelatin silver print, Irene Poon's Cibachrome, and Neal White's toned silver gelatin print.

The portfolio has remained together and is being offered complete, with all 15 listed photographic works and the accompanying printed portfolio material shown.

Provenance: From the personal collection/estate of photographer and longtime San Francisco State University photography professor Neal White (1947–2024), whose own 1981 toned silver gelatin photograph is included as No. 9 in the portfolio.

Please examine all photographs carefully for the portfolio's overall condition and the condition of its individual components. Measurements and photographic processes above are taken directly from the portfolio's original printed contents page.

A substantial and uncommon complete portfolio documenting an interconnected group of California photographers at the beginning of the 1980s, preserved together with Jack Welpott's original contextual statement.

Offered separately is the entire set of 75 slide submissions , 4 from each artist here at : https://.io/m/rgivAW
