It is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, on the north bank of the Menominee River at its mouth on Green Bay, part of Lake Michigan. Marinette is a city in Marinette County, Wisconsin, United States, and its county seat. The population was 11,119 at the 2020 census. It is located on the south bank of the Menominee River at its mouth on Green Bay, part of Lake Michigan; to the north is Stephenson Island, part of the city preserved as a park.- The Interstate Bridge connects Menominee, Michigan, and Marinette, Wisconsin, via US-41 spanning the Menominee River. The original structure was completed in December 1929 for $700,000. Following decades of service, the Michigan and Wisconsin Departments of Transportation completely rebuilt the bridge in 2004-2005, reopening it with wider lanes, bike paths, and sidewalks.- The crossing’s transit history dates back to 1867 when a wooden toll bridge was erected on stone piers by lumber baron Isaac Stephenson, who was paid in 20 sections of land. Before this, logging and passenger crossings relied entirely on ferries. By the 1890s, the bridge was heavily utilized by interstate streetcars. Separate municipal rail systems on both sides of the river would meet in the middle, exchanging passengers until the two companies merged in 1903 to form the Menominee and Marinette Light and Traction Company. The interstate trolley service eventually ended in the spring of 1927 when the Traction Company could not afford to pay its portion of the costs to rebuild the bridge.- Today, the modern U.S. Route 41 span serves as a crucial route for commuters and travelers moving between the Upper Peninsula and northeastern Wisconsin.This White Border Era (1915;30) postcard is in good condition.
