The taller cat is hand painted in cobalt blue, warm ochre, cream and dark accents. One of my favorite details is the face: tiny, delicate brushstrokes form the eyelashes above the eyes and fine whiskers around the nose, giving the cat an especially sweet expression. Decorative painted motifs continue around the body.
Writing on this cat appears to read “Tonalá, Mexico.” Because the hand-painted lettering is somewhat difficult to decipher, close-up photographs of the marking are included so buyers can view it for themselves.
The second cat has an entirely different character, with a metallic brass-tone exterior, twisted decorative trim and an overlapping scale-like pattern across the back. Fine painted whiskers add another lovely handmade detail to the face.
Approximate measurements:
Painted cat: 4 1/4" tall to the tip of the ear
Metallic cat: 4" tall
Condition:
Good vintage condition with age-appropriate surface wear and handmade variations. The metallic cat has natural variation and patina to its finish. No major damage noted. Please review all photographs closely, including the close-up of the writing, as they are an important part of the condition and description.
A delightful pair for a Tonalá or Mexican folk-art collection, a shelf of vintage pottery, or simply for someone who can never have quite enough cats.
