In the late 1930's Western States produced an unusual pocket knife designed especially for miners. At that time, there was a large mining industry County, where throughout Colorado, especially in Boulder there were

numerous operations for coal, gold, and tungsten mining.

Miners reported that the sheepfoot blade in their was the first to wear out because they pocket knives and other special tasks. preferred it for slitting dynamite sticks. They requested a large pocket knife with more than one sheepfoot blade. The pattern selected to meet already in production as an extra-large this demand was the number 94, stockmen's knife, number 53094, and as a "Mountain Man Trapper's Knife," number 52094C. A new version for miners with four sheepfoot blades, number 6494, was produced until World War II.
