NGC Bronze AE of NABATAEA - Reign of King Aretas IV 9/8BC-AD40
Neighbors to Judaea, and contemporaries of Jesus Christ, the Nabataeans were an ancient Arab people who inhabited northern Arabia and the southern Levant. These coins would have circulated within and around the Holy Land during His lifetime. The Nabataeans' most famous city is Petra in present-day Jordan. They emerged as a distinct civilization between the 4th and 2nd centuries BCE, known for their extensive trading network and considerable wealth. Despite their fierce independence, they were annexed into the Roman Empire in 106 CE by Emperor Trajan. Their unique culture, characterized by finely potted painted ceramics, was absorbed into the Greco-Roman world. They converted to Christianity during the Later Roman Era. The Nabataeans were skilled traders and builders, constructing Petra in the 1st century BCE, which grew to a population of around 20,000. They were allies and rivals of various regional powers, including the Hasmoneans and Romans. Eventually, under the Pax Romana, they became a peaceful and prosperous people focused on trade and agriculture. The kingdom was eventually absorbed into the Roman province of Arabia Petraea. By the 5th century, they had converted to Christianity, but their influence waned with the arrival of new Arab invaders, leading to their transformation into peasants and the division of their lands among different Arab tribal kingdoms. The city of Petra gained Western attention in the 19th century through exploration by Johann Ludwig Burckhardt.Higher Grade -Certified Authentic and Encapsulated by NGCObverse: Portrait of Aretas IVReverse: Cornucopias
