Spyderco says "This Mule Team blade features Böhler-Uddeholm’s K294 MICROCLEAN® tool steel. Manufactured in Sweden using their third-generation powder metallurgy technology, K294 is essentially an expression of A11 tool steel enhanced by the benefits of the powder metallurgy process. Also comparable to Crucible Industries'® CPM® 10V®, it is most often used in demanding cold-work tooling applications requiring extreme wear resistance and compressive strength. As a blade material, its wear resistance translates into outstanding edge retention, especially when used to cut abrasive materials." This model was Spyderco's first knife of this tool steel. The mule models are not sold for authorized Spyderco dealers to resell. They are made forexperimental testing and to give Spyderco response about them (a very experimental product of what they think they would want to use in production models knives and often I think the different models of mules I have bought and used all were excellent! So is this one! I also think with a handle and sheath they make excellent camp, backpacking, EDC of fixed blades, and a great option for all emergency personal etc... as well (I think you get the idea here as they are full tang and made to be tested (abused??). Idid some testing with mine (the one I kept and used for testing, not this unused one you are purchasing) and was extremely please and I am keeping my own, but this is brand new and inside the box is sealed in a heavy duty bag withdesiccant. Specifically created for tool steel obsessed knife enthusiasts, it provides a consistent fixed-blade platform for the comparative testing of different blade steels, as well as a source of convenient “kit” blades for aspiring knifemakers. This remarkable Mule Team offering showcases a combination of a HIGH Hardness, High EDGE RETENTION, and MORE EDGE RETENTION and sharpness too, I think (my opinion) this very high level ofCarbon 2.45%andVanadium (9.5%) is a HUGE help with the edge retention and sharpness during use.Mule Team knives do not include handle scales or a sheath. Some people use a paracord wrap or make their own handles, and or sheaths, but after market products for both and Spyderco directly sells both, handles and sheaths are available with a little searching effort. It even is somewhat usable as is, but not the preferred choice. Paracord works quite well. I took actual pictures so you could see what this package looked like of the knife you are actually going to receive and one small group of pictures that are clearly marked of my personal test model (yes, exactly same model) of the blade design since yours is in a sealed bag in the pictures. Note tiny tear almost invisible on box corner and shown in pictures but is so small it may not be noticible but I mention it here for you to know.
