Born in Independence, Missouri, around 1844 to a slavemother and a free father and named Cathay Williams.She enlisted in the US Army under the nameWilliam Cathay. She is the first African American female solider to enlist withthe Army. She is also the only documented black woman to serve in the Army inthe 19th century and she is the only known black female soldier to serve as a part of theBuffalo Soldiers. She was assigned to the38th United States Colored Infantry Regiment.
