- The Handle Alteration:A standard military issue Ka-Bar features an oval-shaped handle made of tightly stacked leather washers. The original leather handle on this piece deteriorated or rotted away—a common issue in humid Pacific theater environments or from years of improper storage.
- Theater-Made / Field Repair:To keep the weapon functional, a soldier or a later owner replaced the leather with a custom, handmadebamboo gripsecured directly to the knife's flat stick tang usingthree metal pins.
