Historical Background
Founded in 1572 by Duke Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy, the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus became one of the principal chivalric orders of the House of Savoy and, following Italian unification, an important order of the Kingdom of Italy.
The order was awarded in recognition of distinguished military, civil, diplomatic, scientific, and charitable service. Miniature insignia were worn with formal attire and remain popular among collectors of Italian and European orders and decorations.
