Original WWI German Iron Cross 2nd Class 1914 EK2 RW Marked Brass Core Variant
Authentic Imperial German World War I Iron Cross 2nd Class (EK2), 1914 dated. This one is an uncommon non-magnetic brass (Buntmetall) core with an \"RW\" maker mark on the suspension ring.Sourced directly from the historic Moore estate archive in Franklin, Kentucky, remaining in untouched, uncleaned collector condition.
Unlike standard issue iron-core examples, this cross has a non-ferrous brass-alloy core. These non-magnetic variants were produced during the Imperial era by independent wartime jewelers, often for private purchase or naval wear due to brass\'s natural resistance to corrosion and rust.
Specifics:
- Era & Designation:Imperial German WWI Iron Cross 2nd Class (1914)
- Maker\'s Mark:\"RW\" stamp on the suspension ring (cataloged Imperial maker mark, though unknown maker, to my knowledge)
- Core Material:Non-magnetic brass alloy (Buntmetall) core
- Construction:Period-correct, true 3-piece construction (two outer frame halves sandwiching the core with visible perimeter join seam)
- Dimensions:1.75 in (44.4 mm) wide
- Weight:17.37 g (typical weight profile for authentic non-ferrous / thinner-gauged core variations)
- Finish & Patina:Original black core finish remains substantially intact, with natural age wear revealing the warm golden brass beneath. Untouched, unpolished estate patina throughout.
Notes for Collectors:
Non-ferrous (Buntmetall) core EK2s represent a specialized collecting area within Imperial German awards. These variants are encountered far less frequently than standard magnetic iron-core examples. Their exact purpose and production history remain the subject of ongoing research, with documented examples generally believed to include private-purchase and alternative wartime production.
Condition:
Very good antique condition with expected age-related wear. High-relief details remain crisp on the imperial crown, central \"W\" cipher, and 1914 / 1813 dates. Suspension ring moves freely. No modern cleaning, polishing, or repairs. No ribbon.
Please keep in mind this is an antique item and not new; surface wear consistent with careful age may be present. Photos are of the actual item you will receive. Please view all photos as they are part of the I’m happy to answer any questions or send additional photos upon request.
