Snagged this matching pair of Art Deco sand urn ash stands from the old IOOF Lodge 172 in Fredericktown, Missouri.
Made by Compo Products (Commercial Metal Products Co., Chicago), these commercial smoking stands would have originally been filled with sand or fine gravel. Smokers simply tapped their ashes into the bowl and extinguished cigarettes or cigars directly in the material. Hotels, theaters, lodges, office buildings, and train stations used stands like these for decades before modern ashtrays became the norm. There was 2 entrances of the lodge so it makes sense they prolly had one at each door.
I love the design on these… textured black bodies, aluminum bowls, and those classic Streamline Moderne speed lines running down the front…Even better, both still retain their original Compo labels inside. Great condition on both stands 🙌🏼🇺🇸
Use for original purpose or repurpose as urns.. they’re sick!!
