Camp Winfield Scott was an adobe fort built in 1866 along Cottonwood Creek, Paradise Valley, in Humboldt County Nevada and manned by the 8th US Cavalry who fought Indians in a number of skirmishes in the vicinity In 1871 it was abandoned by the Army and the land returned to a private owner. The historic town of Paradise Valley is built on the site of the ghost-town Valleytown. An Original US Army Special Order issued at Headquarters Department of California, San Francisco, May 3, 1871 returning all the buildings of the Camp to a private owner, by Command of Brigadier-General Otis. The 1p 9 x 7" Order is signed by First Lieutenant Hugh Gibson Brown, 12th US Infantry, and is also stamped as received at San Francisco , 1871. Comes w service info for Captain Brown, an Iowa native who served with the 15th Iowa Infantry during the Civil War and received an Award of merit for the Siege of Vicksburg.
