Product History:

• A.S. Hinds Company was based in Portland, Maine, and they were known for producing skin creams and toilet preparations.

• Their Honey and Almond Cream was a bestselling lotion and advertised as a treatment for dry, rough, or chapped skin — marketed especially to women.

• The inclusion of 7% alcohol was typical at the time, both as a preservative and astringent.

• The amethyst (purple) glasswas originally clear; this type of glass turns purple when exposed to sunlight due to manganese used in the glass as a decolorizer — a strong clue to its age.

• The label design with ornate typography and floral elements is very typical of Art Nouveau influence, which was popular from the late 1890s through the 1910s.
