Two Identical Portraits of a Victorian Baby from the Park Grove Gallery Asbury Park NJ Circa 1896 - 1899 with Button Boots!
This pair of identical photos of an unidentified baby in Asbury Park, NJ, gives you two for one price!
Asbury Park is the home of the famous Baby Parade that lasted almost 100 years. The very first one was held in July of 1890, just a few years before this photo was taken at the Park Grove Gallery, which was located at No. 1 Main Street in Asbury Park, right near Wesley Lake - and just a few blocks from the pavilion where the Baby Parade ended.
It is quite likely that this baby was in the parade and then visited the Park Grove Gallery to have a commemorative photo taken, although we will never know for sure since this photo is unidentified. Still an interesting connection!
The baby is seated on a beautifully upholstered chair and looks to be about five to eight months old. Victorians dressed their babies the same way regardless of gender, so we can't tell if this baby is a boy or a girl. The baby is wearing a white dress or Christening gown with some lace details, and adorable Victorian-era soft-soled button boots. The baby is holding a Victorian teething rattle in its hands.
This is a classic Victorian baby photo!
The photos are identical but while the main photo is in fair to good antique condition, the extra photo shows very slight fading and water damage, with its mat darkened in color. The good photo has very slight darkening on the mat and the lower right corner has a small tear near the photographer's address, but the photo itself is sharp and clear with minimal scratches and only one dark pinpoint flaw near the top.

Both photos are now in polypropylene sleeves with the more damaged photo contained in a separate polypropylene sleeve to keep it away from the better photo.
