I have multiple sets, so the one you receive may not be the one Palmer Brothers Company operated in Meadville, Pennsylvania and is currently known only for their \"Welloct\" line of patented pliers. The company was founded as the Palmer Brothers Tool & Forging Company and was in operation before 1940, based on online references.
The company\'s main products were pliers based on patent2,152,563, issued to Robert W. Palmer and John P. Palmer in 1939.
The patent describes a slip-joint mechanism in which a forged oval tab on one handle operates within overlapping circular wells in the other handle. The forged tab remains locked in one well when the angle between the handles is small, and slips between the wells (to change the adjustment) when the handles are opened.
In 1945 the company coined the \"Welloct\" brand for their pliers, presumably a reference to the forged tab being locked in a circular well or \"well-locked\".
By the late 1940s the company had changed its name to the Palmer Welloct Tools Corporation, based on the apparent success of the pliers.
