There is something wonderfully stubborn about a box containing 50 postcards in an age when most communication arrives accompanied by a notification sound. Snoopy and company are apparently prepared to defend handwritten correspondence whether the rest of civilization participates or not. The collection gives you 50 different opportunities to surprise somebody with an object that cannot be swiped away, muted, or accidentally buried beneath 137 unread emails. Classic Peanuts humor is particularly well suited to postcards because Charles Schulz could squeeze an entire emotional crisis into a few comic panels and still leave room for Snoopy to steal the scene. Charlie Brown supplies existential uncertainty. Lucy provides unsolicited management. Woodstock contributes whatever Woodstock believes he is contributing. Snoopy remains magnificently convinced that ordinary rules are suggestions intended for lesser dogs. Together they create a collection that ranges from sweet to ridiculous without becoming generic greeting-card sentiment. Some cards can be mailed while favorites can easily become small pieces of display art. Others may simply remain safely inside the box because giving away Snoopy is harder than anticipated. There are technically 50 postcards here. Emotionally, however, possession may complicate the mailing process.
Charles M. Schulz introduced Peanuts in 1950, beginning a comic strip that would grow into one of the most recognizable and influential works in newspaper cartooning. At its center was Charlie Brown, an ordinary kid whose repeated defeats somehow made him one of popular culture\'s most enduring optimists. Around him developed a cast with remarkably distinct personalities: bossy Lucy, philosophical Linus, piano-obsessed Schroeder, Charlie Brown\'s sister Sally, tiny Woodstock, and eventually the wonderfully imaginative Snoopy. Schulz frequently used their seemingly simple conversations to explore friendship, insecurity, disappointment, ambition, loneliness, and the strange business of trying again after yesterday went badly. Snoopy expanded the strip\'s possibilities by escaping everyday life through an enormous imagination that transformed his doghouse into everything from a writer\'s desk to a World War I flying ace\'s aircraft. That mixture of humor and melancholy helped Peanuts resonate far beyond the newspaper page. The characters eventually appeared in television specials, books, merchandise, and generations of collections while retaining the distinctive personality of Schulz\'s original drawings. Postcards are an especially fitting format for artwork built around concise visual storytelling. Each card becomes a miniature piece of the larger Peanuts world while still serving its original purpose of connecting one person with another. That seems appropriately Schulz-like. Even Charlie Brown might consider receiving one a pretty good day.
