This is a silver gelatin photograph that is unmounted and is 4 x 2½ inches (104x63mm).

It shows a post-mortem portrait of a bearded male subject in profile. His eyes are closed, and his head rests against a white pillow or fabric. The portrait is presented in an oval vignette. The front of the mount is printed with 'Bellingard', a monogram logo, and 'Lyon'.

The reverse has printed studio information reading 'Photographie au charbon', 'P. Bellingard', 'Place St Pierre', 'Maison Pleney 2e Etage.', and 'Lyon'.
