Pottery: Taos Jar by Edna Romero
4.75\" x 7.25\" D
Edna (Naranjo) Romero’s given name is K”apovi. She is a member of a long line of Naranjo family potters. All of the artists in this family are very talented and collectable – they are considered one of the premier families of potters at Santa Clara. She is the daughter of potter Rose Naranjo, and sister of Rina Swentzell, Tessie Naranjo, Tito Naranjo, Jody Folwell, Dolly Naranjo, Michael Naranjo and Nora Naranjo-Morse. She is the aunt of Roxanne Swentzell, Jody Naranjo, Susan Folwell, Polly Rose Folwell, Dusty Naranjo and Forrest Naranjo.
Although she is from Santa Clara Pueblo, Edna lives at Taos and makes pottery using micaceous clay. Her beautiful pieces reflect the long history of pottery in the Southwest from the use of the clay material, to the firing with the smoke clouds caused by the cottonwood and cedar chips. Her pottery has an overall visual simplistic beauty.
Taos Pueblo is a member of the Eight Northern Pueblos. Natives will almost never speak of their religious customs to outsiders, and, because their language has never been written down, much of the culture remains unknown to the rest of the world. A tribal land of 95,000 acres (38,000 ha) is attached to the pueblo, and about 4,500 people live in this area
