RARE, Excellent 1916 J.F. ARNOLD LOOSE COUPLER

Here for your consideration is a“Navy\" Receiving Transformer, known colloquially as a Loose Coupler,manufactured in the mid-teens by J.F. Arnold in New York City.

I believe this to be the earliest and rarest Loose Coupler Iever owned.

This 18” x 6.5” x 6” Loose Coupler sold for $15.00 in 1916.

In the early, pre-broadcast days of radio, a loose coupleris what was used to tune signals. It was typically operated in combination witha variable condenser, a crystal detector, a long wire antenna and a pair ofheadphones. Other accessories were available as well, but the loose coupler,being the tuner, was the heart of the operation.

Condition is very good throughout, and the Loose Coupler isoriginal throughout, as you can see in the pictures.

Mahogany base is undamaged and the original finish is stillintact.

Hard rubber panels are likewise undamaged.

Windings are tight on both the primary and secondary coils,and the secondary slides easily along the rails.

All knobs turn as they should.

Original wiring throughout, with no re-soldering or repairs.

All binding post nuts are original, and none of them aremissing.

Radio Museum shows this as Model #5 and states:
“J.F. Arnold \"Arnold\" Navy Type Loose Coupler With suitableinductance in conjunction with an Audion Detector, this instrument has provenvery efficient for receiving undamped waves.
The tuner will tune up to 3500 meters. Price in 1919 was $18.00.”

Based on a 1916 advertisement inQSTmagazine,a J.F. Arnold loose coupler was a piece of early radio equipment sold foramateur use. A loose coupler isa two-coil tuning device used in crystalradio receivers from the 1900s to 1920s.

Description and function

The J.F. Arnold loose coupler, and loose couplers ingeneral, were used to tune early radios. This was done by adjusting the coilsto achieve the desired balance between signal strength and selectivity.

·Two coils: Aloose coupler features a primary coil and a secondary coil. The primary coil,which is stationary in a base, connects to the antenna and a ground.

·Adjustablecoupling: The secondary coil is mounted on a sliding mechanism that moves it inand out of the primary coil. Sliding the coil changes the magnetic\"coupling,\" or mutual inductance, between the two coils.

• Tuning for selectivity:
• Loose coupling: Pulling the coils farther apart reduces the coupling, which increases the selectivity. This helps to filter out unwanted signals from nearby transmitting stations.
• Tight coupling: Pushing the coils closer together increases the coupling and results in a louder signal, but with lower selectivity.
• Crystal detector: The secondary coil is wired to a crystal detector and headphones. Tuning the coupler, along with the other adjustments, allowed the user to find the optimal reception for a station.
