Just in time for World Cup celebrations, this rare, hand-made serving tray designed in an intricate, cubist style of inlaid exotic woods. The design depicts a soccer match showing 10 players in active poses – including a goalie diving to block the ball.
Made in Holland in the mid-1920s (information supplied by the reputable antique dealer from which it was purchased), this rare, likely one-of-a-kind, exceptional tray has been in my personal collection since 2004 and has been very well cared for (regularly treated with lemon oil). I have never actually used it as a tray – instead hanging it on the wall like a true piece of cubist art.
Approximately 20" long by 13" wide with an interior 3/8" lip, the tray has 5 inlaid stripes encircling the octagonal shape. Even the reverse side displays a 20-piece marquetry pattern of triangles (as shown).
The tray is in absolute MINT condition for its age of more than 100 years with no loose pieces, no chips, cracks or separations and only a few minor surface scratches on the back to indicate that it was rarely used.
Signed "CW" as shown. Makes a great trophy!
