This vintage mid-century modern Kokeshi/Sosaku Modernist Japanese folk art hand-carved wooden sculpture is a RARE and uniquely collectible piece!Is is estimated that the sculpture is carved out of Keyaki wood. It is very weighty.Markings on bottom of sculpture base appears to be Kanji text: top right character appears to be 「竹」: ("Take/Bamboo") or 「𠮷」 : ("Yoshi/Good Luck"). Middle and lower markings appear to be the combination of the artist's signature, an artisan's mark (chop mark), or a location/workshop designation written in stylized ink.Kokeshi/Sosaku Modernist Tradition: In Japan, stylized wooden folk carvings often fall under Sosaku (Creative) folk art, where artists sign the base of their sculptures.Unique geometric/brutalist carving style. Sculpture measures approximately 7 inches; base is approximately 1.75 inches.
